reposting a message from In Defense of Animals- let's make this march a big one! spread the word.
“Join IDA on Fur Free Friday, November 27th, the day after Thanksgiving, for a march in downtown Portland past all the locations that continue to sell fur. This peaceful, family-friendly march has historically been the largest annual animal rights demonstration in the area, where activists take over the streets of downtown to share a message of compassion about fur-bearing animals.
What: Fur Free Friday March When: Friday, November, 27; meet at 11 a.m. (march leaves at 11:30 a.m.) Where: Corner of SW Yamhill and Broadway (in front of Nordstroms)
This year more than ever, we need your help to make it a success. The city of Portland has changed their policy on police-escorted street closures for free speech events, and we must have at least 200 participants this year in order to do our traditional march in the street. If we can’t get 200 people out for Fur Free Friday, our march will have to proceed on the sidewalks, which may complicate the event and compromise our impact.
For at least the past decade the Portland animal rights community has taken over the streets of downtown Portland to raise our voices in unison with activists all over the country and world on Fur Free Friday. Please, do everything you can to join us and spread the word to get more people involved. We need to rally at least 200 people to make this year’s street march happen. Signs, banners and literature will be provided, just bring people! If you have any questions or to confirm your attendance, contact matt@idausa.org." |

Real fast before I head out for lunch:
I get irritated when I respond to someone's email and they come back with "Thank you for your quick reply."
Um, isn't it supposed to be quick? How long are these people taking to respond to an email anyway? |

Work so far this week has been crazy and busy (but I kinda like it that way so I'm not complaining) and my post-work life has also been busy. So, I'm going to take a moment to record my life for the past few days so that I don't forget. I like being able to look back on what I was doing.
So, here we go:
Friday
Rushed home from work to take Phil to the vet for a booster shot. The maintenance guy for our house was still working on the insulation and he'd put the dogs outside. I went outside to call for them and couldn't find Phil. In a panic, I rushed down our deck stairs and saw that the basement door (which is under the deck) was open. I rushed down the stairs to the basement door and wanged my head on the underside of the deck. I hit my head so hard I actually bit into my tongue and drew blood. Thankfully, Phil was hanging out in the basement. A little bit of chaos later off we went. Apparently, though, I was still kind of out of it since I told the vet the scale said Phil weight 50 pounds when he really weighs 70. Ugh.
Saturday
Met up with the CF group at a beading store in a cute little downtown area a few towns over from me. We took a class on glass bead necklace making. At the time I didn't know if it was worth the $28 but I've already worn my necklace twice this week so I suppose that's something. I kept meaning to take a picture of it up close but forgot amidst the craziness. So, here's a photo of me wearing it at the bead place.
( Kind of out of focus, too. Oh well. )
After necklace-making, some of us headed out for lunch. Then I headed home and spent the evening cleaning and putting the house back together since the insulation process was pretty much done.
Sunday
Ran my best 10K race ever! Ate brunch at my favorite place. Crashed out for a few hours and took a nap. Then did all the usual Sunday things like make a grocery list and go to the store.
The rest of this week
Monday was meetings and prepping for the training sessions I was leading on Tuesday and Wednesday during work and then dog training after work. Tuesday night I went to my new gym for the first time and tried out the computer system that prints out a strength training work out for you and then I ran on the treadmill for awhile. And last night I attempted a public transit experiment. Instead of taking my usual train home and then driving to the gym, I took a train directly from work to the gym. I wanted to see if I could get there in time to change and make it to the 6PM fitness class. Turns out, I can! And then I just called Jason to come pick me up once I was done. I think I'll be doing that a lot more often now.
Tonight is the final dress rehearsal for The Addams Family Musical which has its world premier tomorrow night. And, yes, Jason got us tickets to the dress rehearsal. I get to see Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth...for free. Pretty cool, huh? I suppose there are some perks to living in Chicago.
Tomorrow night the dog sitter is coming over to meet Phil. Jason is driving to CU for the final race of the season. Saturday I'm meeting Kate for lunch for the first time. And Sunday is another CF meetup group meet up.
I think I'm going to need a vacation here pretty soon! |

This week's questions were suggested by drgilesstuart.
1) Which one is more irritating- being too hot or being too cold? 2) Were you born in the winter or the summer? 3) What are your favourite foods to eat when you need to warm up and cool down? 4) Which one are you more likely to suffer from- hayfever or flu- and does it run in your family? 5) You are granted a day of perfect weather whenever you like. What day do you place it on and why?

Which buffet places in town (if any) are particularly vegan-friendly? As a lacto-ovo vegetarian I find Sweet Tomatoes pretty good, but I'm not sure if my out-of-town vegan friends would find enough to eat there for the price. I'm pretty much looking for someplace with an awesome salad and soup selection, although I guess I wouldn't say no to a wider selection. Clear labeling (or people I can ask) is important because I get an upset stomach if I eat too much soy, so I need to avoid foods with giant chunks of tofu or most fake meats in them. (I can have a little soy, but not too much. Think "lactose intolerance" level rather than "allergy" level.) This is why someplace where I can make and eat a giant salad is a good choice, since I can always go without dressing if I have to and fresh vegetables are delicious.
Also, can anyone point me to a website that lists foods that "go together" for meals? I can get the nutritional aspects of meal planning pretty well, but sometimes I have trouble with my meals "flowing" well, for lack of a better term. Example: today I am making scalloped potatoes, and figure I need something else to go with them. I'm planning on also having some steamed veggies, and am now looking for that elusive third thing to serve with dinner. Joy of Cooking has a bunch of little 3-thing lists I used to use when stumped, but they're not veggie-friendly (I have a pretty old edition, so the newer Joy may be better about this - I have no idea).
Thanks! |

I thought about doing National Blog Posting Month but I just don't know if I have enough to say this year. Even though I'm crazy busy. What do you think? Should I try even though I already missed Wednesday? Got any topic ideas you want me to write about?
In the mean time, I can tell you that Jason and I went to see Young Frankenstein: The Musical last night. Definitely snicker-worthy. No good catchy tunes, but the performers were good and it stayed fairly faithful to the spirit of the movie. A decent amount of cursing and LOTS of overtly sexual references. I noticed a young girl (maybe about age 8 or 10) sitting a few rows behind us. I hope her parents knew what they were exposing her to when they brought her. Eh, she probably didn't get most of the jokes anyway.
We went to the Atwood Cafe for dinner. Jason enjoyed his steak. I had an interesting meal of chicken and cranberry ravioli that was good but had way too much butter in the sauce.
Tonight I'm meeting with a professional trainer at my new gym for the new member consultation. I'm looking forward to it. They have a system where the trainers can input recommended exercises and you go to a computer in the gym and print out your workout schedule whenever you come in. You check off the exercises you did and then you leave the completed form and they can track your progress and update the schedule as needed. Pretty cool, huh? Anyway, tonight is just the baseline stuff.
I've run twice at lunch this week. Today the guys I ran with were trying to talk me into signing up for a 10K on the 22nd. Apparently most of the regular lunch time running group is running it. I'm still trying to decide. And then one of my high school friends told me he's thinking about running the Santa Shuffle 5K on December 5th. Apparently they hand out Santa hats and beards (Aside: I originally typed 'bears' and almost hit "post" before I realized it) for the runners to run in and the race shirt is customized to look like Santa's coat and belt. I'm intrigued. Maybe I'll run it even if my friend doesn't.
We're getting insulation put into the walls of our house. This means all our furniture is shoved to the middle of the rooms and stacked on top of each other so the contractor can access the walls. I'm trying to be cool about it all since getting insulation is a good thing. I think I'll feel better once we can actually use our couch or dining room table again. Hopefully Saturday afternoon? |

What exactly is a "mofles" and what would I want it on my car???
Sorry about the blurriness. I was in my car, it was cold and a little rainy and I had to turn off the flash on the camera.
Click for an enlarged view. I'm trying out Picasa for the first time since my Flickr Pro account expired.

Before I get back to data entry, here's a little meme from gonzostar:
Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."
• I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity • Update your journal with the answers to the questions • Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions
And the questions she gave me:
1. If you didn't have to work, what would you do?
Well, at first I'd probably waste a lot of time watching tv and goofing off online. Then I'd find an archives or a library that needed volunteers and do that for a few hours or days a week. The rest of my time I'd spend working out. And since this is a fantasy land I'd be working out with a personal trainer and a running coach. I'd probably try to get more into baking and cooking, too.
2. What is your favorite movie?
Silence of the Lambs, hands down.
3. When you were little, what did you want to be "when you grew up"?
I wanted to be a veterinarian for years. I still think being a vet tech would be awesome except for the part where I'd have to be hopped up on allergy meds so I could handle the cats. Excuse me while I go sneeze and wheeze.
4. What are you most afraid of?
Looking like an idiot or having people think I'm stupid.
5. What is one talent you wish you had?
Aside from wishing I was a naturally fast runner (but then where would the sense of accomplishment come from?), I wish I could sing. I mean, I CAN sing. I was in choir for years. I just wish I was much, much better at it. |

Friday
Went out to procure costumes. Did amazingly well for the night before Halloween. Amazed Jason with my knowledge that, yes, Sears does indeed sell men's coveralls. Ate dinner at Stir Crazy. Got home around 9:45 PM.
Saturday
Went out for a run around 8 AM. Got kind of lost. But that's okay because I ended up going a different route and finding an house that really went all out for Halloween.
( Photos under here )
What you can't see is in the hut they had a mannequin dressed up as a zombie Michael Jackson and there was a stereo playing Michael Jackson songs. Too funny.
After cleaning up, I went and picked up the rest of what we needed to finish off Jason's costume. The fabric store let me down, but Michael's saved the day. Amazingly, again, Michael's wasn't that busy. I thought for sure it would be full of other last-minute costume-makers like me. Not so.
Then Jason and I went to the theater to see Paranormal Activity. Was it creepy? Hell yes. Although I kept laughing at the guy sitting behind me who kept yelling "WHOA!" when something weird would happen on screen. I'm not good at movie reviews, but I will say that if you want a creepy movie without all the blood and gore of most "scary" movies then this is the one to see.
After the movie we came home and I prepped Jason's costume while making caramel apple muffins. They were from a mix, though, so no recipe. I took them to the party but no one ate them, so we have plenty left. They make yummy desserts.
The party was a blast. I admit to being a little wall-flowerish at first since everyone seemed to know everyone but I only knew a few people. But, as always, once everyone was well-lubricated it was fine. In case you missed them, the photos and a brief write-up are here.
Sunday
I remembered, in my drunken haze, to turn the clocks back before going to bed. I slept in and then got ready to go to my hair appointment. I got a haircut. Still not sure I love it. Always have to give it a few days.
Picked up a book from the library (Grave Secret by Charlaine Harris. I almost read the whole thing yesterday. I can't wait to find out what's going to happen next!) and then raked leaves. The only tree in our yard hasn't even dropped its leaves so I'm not even sure where they all came from. Anyway, I did that plus some other yard work.
Then? Then I took a nap. I could barely keep my eyes open. Dragged myself out of bed to make dinner (White Bean Chili and Jalapeno Bulgar) and finish the menu and grocery list for the week. Ate dinner, went to the store, and then read my book.
Yes, I believe I got everything done on my to-do list and more. I even joined a new gym. Yes, I toured the fancy-schmancy gym in downtown Oak Park. For like 15 bucks more a month than my current gym membership I get so many more amenities. Totally drool-worthy. So, I joined up and canceled my Y membership.
This week is busy busy busy. Tonight is obedience class. Tomorrow night is the monthly Oak Park Runner's Club meeting (where we'll be talking about yoga). Wednesday night Jason and I are going to see Young Frankenstein: The Musical. Thursday night I have my free fitness consultation with a personal trainer (and marathon runner) at my new gym. Friday night I have to run Phil by the vet for a booster shot. Saturday morning I'm going to a jewelry making class with the CF meetup ladies. And then Sunday I'm running a 10K race. Whew! |
